The Selangor & Federal Territory Hainan Association has marked more than 130 years since its establishment in year 1889. The present 6-tied Thean Hou Temple was completely built in 1987 and officially launched in 1989. It is the biggest one out of 150 Mazu temples in Malaysia with the area of 6,758m2 situated on Robson Heights, solely owned and managed by The Selangor & Federal Territory Hainan Association.

Many activities related to Mazu culture, Buddhism and Taoism are held at Thean Hou Temple as the Goddess Mazu, Goddess of Mercy and the Goddess Shui Wei are worshiped in the temple. It is a Chinese cultural tourism destination known for integrating various aspects of Mazu folk culture, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in the Kuala Lumpur area.  Thean Hou Temple frequently organizes various celebration activities in conjunction of Taoism, Buddhism and Chinese festivals such as Goddess Festival, Spring Festival, Wesak Day and so on which attract many devotees and tourists from far and near.

Thean Hou Temple is also considered one of the marriage registration venues where many couples register their marriage and held their collective wedding ceremonies every year.

The Selangor & Federal Territory Hainan Association is the first Chinese Clan in Malaysia awarded ISO 9001:2000 Certification of Quality Management System and ISO 14001:2004 Certification of Environmental Management System. The Association leads the local Chinese Clans move towards the concepts modernization, professionalization management, organization rejuvenation, activities diversification, and system institutionalization. The implementation of ISO management system by the Association for its temple administration so far, which has set an good role model for the Chinese clans in home country.

The Selangor & Federal Territory Hainan Association fully support chinese education.  As early as 1917, SJKC Chiao Nan was established. Today, this Chinese primary school located on Pahang Road, Kuala Lumpur has a history of 104 years.

With the support of the governmental bodies and the private sectors, the award winning Thean Hou Temple has successfully positioned itself on the world stage. In response to the working plans between Malaysia and China, Thean Hou Temple is giving all its effort to help strengthen the bond of nations along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and make Kuala Lumpur a hub of cultures, arts and heritage in Southeast Asia and further promote the tourism in Malaysia.
